I’m not going to say that it was purely lace that drew me to book a holiday in Devon last August, but it was high on my list of priorities (being able to stay in beautiful Torcross was, of course, the main draw).

One of the main things I wanted to do was visit Honiton and specifically the Allhallows Musuem.

The museum houses- amongst a treasure trove of others objects- a collection of Honiton Lace, in a dedicated room.

The collection largely exists as a result of the efforts of Pat Perryman and a group of local lacemakers and includes an impressive range of lace.

The time and effort of often unknown lacemakers in producing this work is incredible. My photos don’t do it justice at all!

The different local trades were celebrated in murals in the nearby shopping precinct.

We also visited the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter which had a collection of lace on display, including sampler strips of numerous different types.

Knowing how time- consuming and challenging I have found Honiton lacemaking in the past gave me such respect and awe for the intricate work displayed, but also inspired me to revisit my Honiton pillow.
