Four seasons in trees
Winter
Spring
Summer
Autumn

Back in 2022-3, I came across the Old Wise Tree pattern, created and shared by Lenka Suchanek on her website. Originally intending to do one tree, I quickly decided that I actually wanted to represent the changing seasons so created four using different coloured thread for each. You can read more about the details, including the threads I used on Lenka’s blog here: https://lenkas.com/2023/03/10/four-seasons-of-old-wise-trees-in-uk/

Lenka’s pattern has been recreated and reimagined many times across the world, and she curates an online gallery (a forest, maybe?!) of finished trees. It’s incredible to see the different interpretations of the pattern in different formats, stitches and materials.

This is a pattern that I will return to again in the future- I’d like to experiment more with the roots particularly. When I displayed the trees at the Pudsey Lace Day in 2022 there was lots of interest in the pattern, as it is so different to traditional Torchon patterns. It is a relatively easy make too and really enjoyable to experiment. You can download the free pattern and tutorial on Lenka’s site: https://lenkas.com/2021/01/16/free-old-wise-tree-pattern-tutorial/

This is lovely! When I get around to playing with more than tatting and teneriffe I want to try making this! It’s very druid-coded! 😍
